BNP in Power: Press Freedom Under Attack.

Apurbo Ahmed Jewel: In Bangladesh’s politics, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has long spoken in favor of press freedom. For years, they have accused others of suppressing journalists, obstructing independent reporting, and violating democratic values. However, when they taste the real power or influence, it often appears that these principles of freedom are quickly forgotten.

Closer observation shows that wherever BNP leaders or their supporters are able to exert influence, there are increasing reports of pressure on the media, threats against journalists, and the creation of fabricated controversies aimed at discrediting reporters. Fear and intimidation are used against journalists who attempt to speak the truth. Those who try to report honestly are often threatened or subjected to attempts at social humiliation and smear campaigns. This is not merely political hypocrisy—it is a direct insult to democratic principles.

The media is often described as the eyes, voice, and guardian of democracy. Yet when BNP finds opportunities to exercise power or influence, those very eyes and voices are frequently suppressed for political convenience. In such circumstances, “press freedom” appears to become little more than a political slogan—used strategically when beneficial, but disregarded when power is within reach.

This reflects a troubling dual character within the party’s political behavior. While outside power they raise strong voices about threats to press freedom, but when close to power the same freedom is often placed under pressure. For those who genuinely care about democracy, this should serve as a serious warning: no political party can truly uphold democratic values unless citizens and journalists remain vigilant and continue to hold power accountable.
